Dracula in Istanbul (1953)

Archives — Thu, 22 Oct 2026 17:40:39 GMT

A rare landmark of world horror, Dracula in Istanbul (1953) transplants Bram Stoker’s tale to Turkey: lawyer Azmi journeys to Transylvania to settle Count Dracula’s property deal, discovers his client is a vampire, and returns home only for the Count to pursue his fiancée, Güzin—reimagined here as a cabaret dancer. Directed by Mehmet Muhtar and based on a 1928 Turkish novel, this atmospheric black-and-white curiosity is notable as the first film to show Dracula with pronounced fangs, with Atıf Kaptan as a balding, clean-shaven Count in formal dress. A fascinating, rarely screened blend of gothic horror and Turkish culture for vampire fans.

Manos: The Hands of Fate (1966)

Archives — Sun, 04 Oct 2026 02:28:18 GMT

From 366 Weird Movies:
Manos: the Hands of Fate demonstrates an important lesson: if applied consistently, incompetence can be a style. This narrative feature film was shot with a hand-wound 16 mm camera that could only capture thirty seconds of footage at a time. The camera was probably intended to be used by families making silent vacation films, and the results look exactly like a home movie from 1966, complete with barely adequate, dull coloration and hazy definition. Since the protagonists are lost vacationers, it’s an oddly appropriate, if accidental, visual scheme, almost as if the movie is found documentary footage of a missing family, a la Blair Witch.

Outlaw! (Orochi, 1925) - Newly Restored with Original Score & English Benshi Narration

Archives — Wed, 20 May 2026 03:23:16 GMT

Discover the legendary 1925 Japanese silent masterpiece Orochi, now restored and retitled to its original intended name: Outlaw.

Directed by Buntarō Futagawa and starring the iconic Tsumasaburō Bandō (Bantsuma) at the peak of his fame, this explosive jidaigeki follows a proud, low-ranking samurai whose sense of justice and fiery temper lead him into a downward spiral of misunderstandings, betrayal, and societal rejection. Framed and hounded by those in power, he transforms from loyal retainer into a feared outlaw—yet the film boldly questions: Who are the real villains in a world ruled by hypocrisy and rigid class structures?

Featuring groundbreaking, kinetic sword-fighting sequences that influenced generations of chambara cinema, raw emotional depth, and a searing critique of feudal injustice that feels startlingly modern, Outlaw was so provocative that censors forced a title change from its original "Outlaw" to "Orochi" (Serpent).

The edition features a score by Doctor Deathray and narration by Robin Black.
